Are you getting a deal?

Sarah Jessica Parker insists on jewelry from Fred Leighton on the red carpet. Where do we non celebs purchase our jewelry? Are people really getting a deal on 47th Street or in the islands? Could we learn something from the A-Listers by purchasing from an educated and trustworthy jeweler in our area? We asked this question to NAJA Independent Appraiser, Gary Lester....

Non celebrities have unlimited venues for purchasing designer jewelry. One of the more exciting things is to get in early on a trend. With the advent of new technologies, ideas that once were to difficult can now be readily made. I think everyone is tired of mass-marketed jewelry pieces available in every chain and discount store. Jewelers that offer custom design options, creating one-of-a-kind pieces is where the future lies. Buying diamonds on 47th street or the islands is a big risk. Often documentation is not supplied for these purchases, or occasionally, this documentation is not from a recognized or accredited grading laboratory. Many times prices are grossly inflated in anticipation of bargain negotiations. IF one is a GREAT negotiator, and IF one KNOWS current values and trends, and IF one is confident in their grading skills, then perhaps deals can be made. All too often, however, people pay about or just a little more than the actual value. Keep in mind that other countries do not have the same consumer protection laws that we enjoy in the US. I’m all for purchasing things from the local jeweler. Irregardless of other factors, the strongest should be the “Yellability” factor. If something is not right, you take a short drive and yell at your jeweler. Most of the time, an ethical jeweler will make it right. Try taking something back to 47th street or the islands is not cost-effective or satisfying. Most local jewelers, especially ones that carry higher end jewelry, enjoy a challenge of making something special and unique. As all things in life, it’s relationship that matter. Having a relationship with someone you know for a long time, builds trust and confidence.
